the republicans are withstanding the attacks on the ryan budget, the medicare attacks, but governor romney would like that lead among older, more reliable, more republican voters to be a little bit bigger than 52-46. that's one thing he needs to work on. this is significant. like in michigan, the auto bailout plays big in ohio and look at this. you might say the president's only getting 41% of white men, 46% of white women. that's actually a good number. if the president can keep above 40% among whites overall and above 40% among white men, it's pretty much game over in the electorate. this is a statistic we will watch as we get closer to election day. if the president is above 40 among whites, especially above 40 among white men, in most states he would be well on his path to victory. you see this more and more in industrial states affected by the auto bailout, the president runs stronger among white men. if that poll were to hold up, can governor romney get to 270 without ohio and how much easier is it for the president to get to 270 with ohio? let's start with the president. he's at 237 right

. but the idea was all of the supporters here tonight supporting mitt romney and paul ryan and starting tomorrow morning they will all be in the different parts of the country probably mostly in the swing states. >> greta: is there any way to when he sure, ohio tonight? i know that everyone on the republican side says governor romney is going to win and everybody on president obama's side says he is going to win. how do you measure it tonight? >> i mean you know obviously, i guess an obama rally you would feel differently. at this rally it seems like he has enormous enthusiasm. this has the feeling of a winning campaign. the enthusiasm here tonight was tremendous. if this s a is swing state i feel good about it even if the polls about even and even if obama has a lead of one or two i suspect the undecided votes are going to go to mitt romney. i have a pretty good feeling about ohio. and if he wins ohio, i think he wins and maybe president obama could feel the same way about it. this is probably the key state. >> greta: why do you all leave, ohio, and spread out across the country? why don't you

] you know, next to ann romney paul ryan was the best choice i have ever made, i got to tell you. [cheers and applause] now we're just entering thekende campaign and as you know at the obama rallies they're shouting four more years, four more years. i just heard you, we're shouting four more days, all right? [cheers and applause] you know the closing hours of a campaign have a dynamic all their own. a lot of voters have known for some time who they were going to vote for but there are others just now putting aside the demands of their daily life and considering how their vote will affect their own life, the life of their children, and of course the course of the country
and so will his running mate, paul ryan. are they trying to put pennsylvania in play, a move of strength or desperation. they have different answers on that one. >> we are going dig deeper into that later. gloves are off on the campaign trail. let's take a listen. >> in the closing weeks of the campaign, romney is using his talents as a salesman to dress up the very same policies that failed our country so badly. the same policies we have been cleaning up after these past four years and offering them up as change. >> a lot of people are hurting. they don't want to see another four years like the last four. do you want to see four more years with 23 americans struggling for good jobs? >> no! >> he took a break because of superstorm sandy, but now there's a lot of rhetoric. >> here is one reason why. take a look at this. the race is extremely tight right now. here is the national cnn poll. the survey is out over the last week and a half. average them together. it's as close as you can get. look at these numbers, colorado is one of the eight battleground states. a very, very close contest.
goes-- asoo goes so goes america, i think you know that. >> clayton: paul ryan making a push in the key battle ground state of ohio. no g.o.p. candidate has ever won the presidency without carrying ohio. john kasich is credited with slightly lowering the unemployment to 7% in september. currently lower than the national average. ohio doing a little better than the national average. so will this help mitt romney in the buckeye state or the reverse? joining me now is the ohio state treasurer and u.s. republican senate candidate josh mandell. nice to see you. how are you doing. >> clayton: i'm doing well. conventional wisdom we've been hearing because ohio is doing better that would help president obama. you say-- you disagree with na or agree. >> i disagree, i believe that governor romney is going to win the state. we're doing well in ohio despite the headwinds from washington. as governor cakasich and i like to say, we think that president can learn from we've earned the highest on our bonds and investment and operating budget deficit into a half billion dollar surplus. pundits talking t
virginia events scheduled for sunday and he's going to campaign in ohio with his running mate, paul ryan, instead. what that means is romney was supposed to campaign in northern virginia and richmond on sunday, two big, bellwether medium markets in virginia and now he's going to be campaigning in three small towns in ohio. it shows you how the storm is impacting the schedule. the flipside is that the storm could potentially, if it's damaging, take president obama off the campaign trail as well and have him come back to d.c. for emergency purposes to be the president of the united states, which we remember is his job. so you know, we have to see how this plays out, but schedules are being adjusted now through tuesday, so far, so we'll see what happens. >> that's as it pertains to the campaigning. then, long term, there are some states, connecticut among them, that have already declared states of emergency, and there are potential scenarios if some of the states take direct hits from the hurricane, power out for days if not more than a week, then that would impact the electronic balloting

of one of the worst moments of the campaign, which we saw here on "morning joe" when paul ryan went to a soup kitchen in ohio after the patrons were gone and put on a crispy white apron and appeared to wash dishes that looked clean. later said they were dirty. mitt romney has to look presidential at times when it would be tempting to do a photo op. to remind you that both campaigns have a real feeling of trepidation at the moment. you pointed out numbers that looked good for romney. but that north carolina poll that you showed, romney tied right before the election, and politico, the carl rove group, up at eight states including north carolina, not a good sign, and fascinatingly, they are not advertising wisconsin, karl rove thinks it's not going to happen for mitt romney considerably narrowing his options. >> what do you make, mike, of what we were talking about earlier? pennsylvania and minnesota attracting money from both campaigns and valuable time from president clinton? >> yeah, it's insurance by them, but i think you made a great point. the bill clinton in minnesota, an aston
, and as a result, those people in this country who want real change from day one are going to vote for paul ryan and myself.
